New Generation Seats 大抖决, CX vs SQ!!!

Ever since we said goodbye to those days where even top notch airlines do not have any personal TVs (PTVs) and all they have on board were boring chairs and the only entertainment on board were whistling at pretty flight attendants (for guys only), eat, sleep, watching a movie being blocked by numerous heads infront and looking out of the window, the revolution of inflight facilities have indeed came a long long way. But as human beings, we will never be satisfied and always wants more. So here comes our new generation seats led on by the fiercest competitors of the aviation industry, Singapore Airlines and of course my beloved Cathay Pacific, however, I will not be bias this time, I will post a comparison of photos of seats for you all to decide which new generation seats you all prefer. Please do comment!

First Class:

CX

  • 36 inches wide seat
  • Guest seat
  • Transform into a bed
  • Massage functions
  • 17 inch TV
  • Personal closet

VS

SQ

  • 35 inches wide Seat
  • Transform into a bed
  • 23 inch TV
  • Mirrow and drawer

Comments: Ok ok, 目瞪口呆了吧?So now CX boast itself to have the biggest seat/bed in the sky but does that meant more comfort? I don't think so, if you all noticed, the TV and personal closet actually eats into the space of the bed which when compared to SQ's, there is 100% leg room for the legs. The guest seat and personal closet of CX's seat is also quite useless and the latter takes up far too much space. Now look at SQ's first class seat, simple simple simple but far more comfortable then CX's, firstly its only smaller than CX's by 1 inch which doesn't matter because the seat is still HUGE and oh my look at the TV! 23 inch, big big big, good for movies I would say. However one good thing about CX's seat is that there is massage function which I think is really cool. But in general, I would rather CX keep its design of the seat simple, therefore in this section, SQ wins!

Business Class

CX

  • Herringbone configuration
  • Fully flat bed
  • Massage function (Great!)
  • Guest seat
  • 15 inch TV
  • Plugs for laptops and wireless connection

VS

SQ

  • World's widest business class seat
  • Fully flat bed
  • Plugs for laptops and wireless connection
  • 15 inch TV

Comments: The new business class on CX is really an disappointment. CX has taken the Herringbone configuration concept from Virgin Atlantic which I think looks nice but impractical. Come on, you are a top notch airline, do something better, don't be a copy cat. Firstly, the seats are narrow, and the so called high walls surrounding the seat that they claim to enhance privacy makes passengers feel like they are flying in small packed tubes. Those seating at the window seats will have trouble viewing the scenes outside and this is again due to those high partition walls. Now, anyone who laid their eyes on the SQ new business class seat would actually be "wow"ing, first the seats don't look like business class seats at all, instead they look like first class seats! And oh my, see the width of the chair. Compare the looks of the cabin between both of them and you will find SQ defines "CLASS" more clearer and louder than CX. Too bad, CX loses again to SQ in this section.

Economy Class

CX

  • Fixed seat design
  • Sliding seat (Technology used in Business Class)
  • Larger 9 inch TV
  • More leg room
VS

SQ

  • More leg room
  • Private reading light
  • Plugs for laptops and wireless connection
  • 10.6 inch TV (Woho! Finally something big in economy class!)

Comments: For economy class, CX did quite a good job though. Fixed seat design, a design that will make having your meals without any disruption anymore, why? Because in the old designs, when that idiot in front of you reclines during meal time, you will want to smack his head because it takes up all your space and you will have difficulty reaching your food, so remember don't be an idiot and recline during meal times, you will cause inconvenience for the person behind! So how does this fixed seat reclines? The seat cushion actually slides out and the seat back reclining into the shell of the seat like those in business class and I would say this is really cool and smart of CX to use this design. But talking of class, CX still loses out to SQ, the private reading light is really thoughtful and wow, you can finally use laptops in economy, great. And the big 10.6 inch TV, oh my, this will really make my economy experience different if I were to fly with SQ because the TV is usually the companion I have in economy. Anyway, I think I will give it a fair for this section as both airlines did a great job over here in economy.

General comments: I would say CX was trying to be cool with all the features and stuff but they have forgotten about the main point which is COMFORT, most passengers don't really care about the gadgets you are providing them with, what they care about most is comfort and I think SQ has successfully captured this main point and therefore their new products are definitely lovable. In general, CX is cool this time and SQ is classy. But for me, a classy ambience is still my taste, so I would have to say SQ wins in this new Generation Seats 大抖决!
